BRC started with a simple problem in my own home wardrobe.
While working in a corporate office in BKC, Bandra, I realised that managing clothes I no longer used had become a real challenge. I started wondering, “Where can I donate my clothes?”
I searched for clothes donation options, NGOs, orphanages and old-age homes across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. I wanted a convenient service where I could simply schedule a pickup and give my clothes for reuse.
I thought, if online shopping for new clothes can bring almost anything to our doorstep, why can't donating clothes be just as easy? We are manufacturing tonnes of clothes daily but we are not having an operational formal system to collect used clothes or old clothes donation in India.
That thought led me to explore how clothes could be collected, reused and channelled more effectively. I began researching traditional clothing reuse systems, including the Devipujak community(waghari), while also understanding the growing impact of fast fashion consumption, bulk clothing production and discarded clothes in dumping ground.
I realised that as cities like Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai continue to grow, we need a more organised system for collecting and reusing wearable clothes from households.
What started as a personal wardrobe problem gradually became an idea to build a clothes donation collection and reuse system connecting urban households with grassroots communities who can't afford new clothes for big families.
